Visiting Our Solar System Interactive Exhibit

Purdue University

The Visiting Our Solar System (VOSS) interactive exhibit in Purdue University’s Discovery Park, was conceived to honor Janice Voss, the first female astronaut to graduate from Purdue University, and who led efforts to launch the Purdue Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program, and to promote interest in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, as well as space exploration.

The exhibit employs to-scale models of the sun and the eight planets in our solar system. Through EPICS, students studying disciplines in engineering and science, as well as communications and public relations, participated in the development of the exhibit, as well as associated website, interactive classroom model and social media.

Loftus Engineering performed the electrical engineering for the project. A new electrical service for the power and lighting was fed from a nearby building. Power is distributed to general, walkway, accent, and integral artwork lighting throughout the site.
